Prop Firm Profit Split Explained: What Actually Reaches You

Prop firm profit split explained: how 80%, 90% and 95% ladders work, the buffers and fees that sit in front of them, and what a $50K payout really pays.

The profit split is the number every prop firm puts in the biggest font. 80%, 90%, 95%, sometimes 100%. It is also the number that tells you the least about what will land in your wallet, because it is applied last, after the buffer, the consistency rule, the qualifying-day count and the activation fee have all had their turn.

This post explains how a split ladder works, what sits in front of it, and what a $3,000 month on a $50K simulated funded account actually pays on each Bold Funded plan. Every figure comes from the Bold Funded forex and futures plan cards as checked on 15 October 2026. Forex products are not offered to residents of the USA or Canada; futures are.

What a profit split is, precisely

A profit split is the share of a withdrawal that goes to the trader. If you request a $3,000 payout at a 90% split, $2,700 is sent to you and $300 stays with the firm. That is the whole mechanism. Three details matter more than the percentage.

First, the split applies to the amount you withdraw, not to the account balance. Profit you leave on the account is still yours to trade with and is split only when you take it out.

Second, the split is a funded-account rule. Nothing is paid out on an evaluation, so an 80% split on a plan you never pass is worth exactly as much as a 100% split on a plan you never pass.

Third, almost every firm runs a ladder rather than a flat rate. The split starts at one level and rises after a number of consecutive payouts. "Up to 95%" means the top rung, not the first one. The difference between the first rung and the top rung, and how many payouts it takes to climb, is where most of the real variation between firms sits.

The Bold Funded split ladder

Here is what the Bold Funded plan cards say, plan by plan, as of 15 October 2026.

PlanStarting splitTop splitHow it risesPayout cycle
Forex Two-Step Classic80%95%90% after two payouts, 95% after fourEvery 14 days, first 14 days after funding
Forex One-Step Fast80%95%90% after two payouts, 95% after fourEvery 14 days, first 14 days after funding
Forex Instant Funded70%95%80% after two payouts, 90% after four, 95% after sixEvery 14 days, after 5 trading days
Futures Bold90%95%Rises with consecutive payoutsEvery 5 days, 5 qualifying days each
Futures Bolt90%95%Rises with consecutive payoutsEvery 7 days, 5 trading days each
Futures Instant Funded90%95%Rises with consecutive payoutsEvery 14 days, after 5 trading days

Two things stand out. The futures plans start ten points higher than the forex evaluation plans, so the ladder matters less there. And the forex Instant account starts at 70%, which is the price of skipping the evaluation; we covered that trade-off in Instant funding vs evaluation.

Every plan also has a Build Your Own option that can set the split to 95% from the first payout for a higher fee. Whether that is worth it depends on how many payouts you expect to take, which we get to below.

What sits in front of the split

The split is the last deduction. These are the rules that decide how much reaches the split in the first place.

The payout buffer. Some plans require you to hold a cushion of profit above the drawdown floor so the account survives the withdrawal. Forex Instant requires 2% of the account size, $1,000 on a $50K. Futures Instant requires the drawdown amount plus $100, $2,100 on a $50K. The evaluation plans (Two-Step, One-Step, Bold and Bolt) have no buffer rule on the plan card. On a buffered plan the money in the buffer is not lost, it is simply not withdrawable yet.

The consistency rule. Where it applies on a funded account (Bolt and both Instant plans, at 40%), no single day may account for more than 40% of your total profit. It does not take money away, but it can delay a request until smaller days have diluted the big one. The maths is worked through in the consistency rule explained.

Qualifying days. Futures payouts need five trading days per request, and on the Bold plan a day only counts when it closed at least $250 of profit. Five green days of $100 each is zero qualifying days. We worked this through in minimum trading days.

Activation. Futures funded accounts carry a one-time $99 activation, paid after you pass and before the funded account is issued. It is not deducted from a payout, but it is money out before any money comes in.

The fee refund. Works in the other direction. On the Two-Step forex plan the evaluation fee comes back in full with your first funded payout. On a $50K that is $299 at list price, or $239 with the BF20 code, added to the first payout rather than taken from it.

A $3,000 month on a $50K account, plan by plan

Assume a trader finishes their first payout cycle with $3,000 of closed profit on a $50K simulated funded account, with the best day inside any consistency cap and enough qualifying days. What reaches them on the first request?

$50K planWithdrawable nowSplit at first payoutTrader receivesAdjustmentsNet first-payout cash
Forex Two-Step Classic$3,00080%$2,400+$299 fee refund$2,699
Forex One-Step Fast$3,00080%$2,400—$2,400
Forex Instant Funded$2,000 ($1,000 buffer stays)70%$1,400$1,000 still on the account$1,400
Futures Bold$3,00090%$2,700$99 activation already paid$2,700
Futures Bolt$3,00090%$2,700$99 activation already paid$2,700
Futures Instant Funded$900 ($2,100 buffer stays)90%$810$2,100 still on the account$810

Reading notes. The Instant rows assume the drawdown floor has locked at the starting balance by the time of the request; while the floor is still trailing, the withdrawable amount is smaller. On Bold, the five qualifying days with at least $250 each must be in place, so a trader who made the $3,000 in two big sessions waits, as the minimum-days post explains. The futures activation and the Two-Step refund are both one-off; from the second payout onwards the Two-Step and One-Step rows are identical and the futures rows have nothing in front of the split.

The headline split told you none of this.

Three plans show "up to 95%" and pay $810, $1,400 and $2,700 on the same $3,000 month. The buffer and the starting rung did that, not the top rung.

The effective split over your first four payouts

The percentage you actually earn is the average across the payouts you take, not the top of the ladder. Take the forex Two-Step on a $50K with a steady $3,000 per 14-day cycle.

PayoutSplitGrossTrader receives
180%$3,000$2,400 (+$299 refund)
280%$3,000$2,400
390%$3,000$2,700
490%$3,000$2,700
5 onwards95%$3,000$2,850

Across the first four payouts, $12,000 gross becomes $10,200 before the refund: an effective split of 85%, not 95%. Add the $299 refund and the first four payouts pay $10,499, about 87.5%. The 95% rung only governs payout five onwards, roughly ten weeks after funding at a 14-day cycle.

That is not a trick, it is how a ladder works, and it is why "up to 95%" and "95% from day one" are different products. Over four payouts the Build Your Own 95% start would have paid $11,400, so the question is simply whether the extra fee for that option is less than the $1,200 difference, and whether you expect to reach payout four at all.

On the futures side the same arithmetic is kinder. Bold and Bolt start at 90%, so the most the ladder can add is five points. A trader who takes four $3,000 payouts on a Bold $50K collects at least $10,800 on $12,000 gross, and the only thing that could reduce it is not having five qualifying days in a cycle.

How scaling changes the numbers

Scaling is the rule that most changes what a split is worth, and it is easy to miss because it lives on a different row of the card. On every Bold Funded plan the balance increases by 25% every second payout, up to $1M of simulated capital, applied automatically.

The interaction is simple: by the time your split reaches its top rung, your account is larger. On a $50K forex account, the second payout takes the balance to $62,500 and the fourth to $78,125. A trader who made 6% a cycle on $50K was making $3,000; on $78,125 the same 6% is $4,688, paid at 90% and then 95%. The split rising from 80% to 95% adds 15 points; the balance rising from $50K to $78K adds 56%. The scaling rule is doing more of the work than the ladder, which is a useful corrective to spending your plan choice on the split alone.

The How it works page shows the scaling table from a $100K account out to the cap.

Comparing splits across firms without being misled

If you are comparing Bold Funded with another firm, or two other firms with each other, use this order and ignore the banner.

  1. 1Starting split, not top split. Most traders take fewer than four payouts on any one account. The first rung is the rate you will experience.
  2. 2Buffer and consistency on the funded account. These decide how much of your profit is withdrawable at all. A 100% split behind a large buffer can pay less, sooner, than 80% with none.
  3. 3Payout cycle and qualifying-day rules. A 5-day cycle at 90% delivers cash faster than a 30-day cycle at 95%, which matters if you are trading for income rather than for a lump sum.
  4. 4One-off items. Activation fees, fee refunds and reset pricing move the first payout by hundreds of dollars on a $50K account, which is more than the ladder does.
  5. 5Then the top split. Once everything above is equal, prefer the higher ceiling.

Write it out as "cash per month on a $50K at my expected return". Two plans that look ten points apart on the split often come within a few dollars of each other on that line, and sometimes the lower split wins.

What to do with this

Decide what you are optimising for. If you want fast, frequent cash and trade futures, Bold's 5-day cycle at a 90% start is the strongest line on the cards, with the $250 qualifying-day rule as the thing to plan around. If you want the cheapest route to a high split on forex, the Two-Step starts at 80% but refunds its fee on the first payout, which on a modest first withdrawal is worth more than the gap to 90%. If you want 95% from the first payout, price it with Build Your Own against the $1,200 the ladder costs over four payouts in the worked example, and be honest about whether you will reach payout four.

The full rule set for every plan, including the split ladder, is on the Bold Funded rules guide. The split is the last number applied; read the card from the top.

Every Bold Funded plan card shows the starting split, the payout cycle and the buffer for the account size you pick.

Frequently asked questions

What is a prop firm profit split?

The share of the profit on a funded account that is paid to the trader, with the rest kept by the firm. A 90% split on a $3,000 payout pays the trader $2,700. The split applies to the amount you withdraw, not to the whole balance, and most firms raise it after a number of consecutive payouts.

Is a 100% profit split better than 90%?

Only if everything in front of the split is the same, and it rarely is. A higher headline split is often paired with a larger payout buffer, a longer payout cycle, a consistency rule or a higher evaluation fee. Compare what reaches you per month on the same account size, not the percentage on the banner.

How does the Bold Funded profit split rise to 95%?

Forex Two-Step and One-Step accounts start at 80%, rise to 90% after two payouts and 95% after four. Forex Instant starts at 70% and rises to 80% after two payouts, 90% after four and 95% after six. Futures accounts start at 90% and rise to 95% with consecutive payouts. The starting split can also be set to 95% from day one with the Build Your Own option.

Does the profit split apply to the evaluation?

No. There is no payout on an evaluation account, so the split only starts when you are funded. On the Two-Step forex plan the evaluation fee is returned in full with your first funded payout, which is a different mechanism from the split and worth more than the split difference on a small first payout.
